Got Java on Mac OS 10.7 Lion? Here’s How

Apple has decided not to include Java on Mac OS X Lion, instead Apple has opted for Oracle themselves to administer and maintain Java directly.

That’s cool. Actually I like it better this way. Let the creators of Java take care of it, ensuring that we have the latest.

Apple actually does provide a way for you to install Java directly from within Mac OS 10.7 Lion, although it may not be totally obvious.

Go to the Terminal app in Applications and open it.

Type the following in the Terminal:

java -version

The Java installer gets invoked, click “Install”.

Java will install and you will see the installer progress bar.

If you return back to terminal and once again type:

java -version

You’ll see that the latest 64 bit version of Java 1.6 is installed
